Eraser does it well, probably better. It is highly rated by CNET. And it's FREE. Also, all you have to do is right-click the file and select erase.

It works.
However, I am not too impressed.
It uses a fairly tedious version of an internal explorer,
Keeps flashing content off and on, and is full of grammar errors.
If software contains grammar errors and typos, that is evidence that there will be slips in the code. (I know this from many hours of browsing through open-source software code).
Overall, you can use it for its intended purpose, but
1) Do not rely on it to be totally bug free and
2) Be careful- There are a number of other errors that are popping up when I run it. I don't want to go pointing any fingers just yet, but you should be wary. Note that I am testing this on a post vista version of XP home, so your machine may react differently.

Not bad software, installs good, runs good but you can never be sure how secure, 'secure' really is.

#5 Fubar, you are a retard. That’s like blaming Henry Ford for all the pollution "Ford" cars have put into the world. What people can't get in their brains is that Bill Gates DOESN'T DEVELOP WINDOWS ANYMORE!!! You cannot blame him for the problems the programmers of Windows make today. If you are so smart and know so much you would see that it's 100% not his fault... but I’m sorry to say that because of your statement you must know nothing about programming or computer history. For those people who rant about hating Windows and yet still use it, you are a hypocrite.

(I know it's hard to swallow the truth, thats why this comment will probably get negative ratings.)

Hi ALL,

Todays is okay for single files however, if you shud want to completely wipe a hard drive so it CAN NOT be recovered try using DBAN from.>>

http://www.dban.org/download

This will revert your hard-drive to a state as if you bought it brand new.

:-) You won't be able to reireve ANY files whatsoever!!

@28: From About.com, some information for you:
BASIC (standing for Beginner's All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) was written (invented) in 1963, at Dartmouth College, by mathematicians John George Kemeny and Tom Kurtzas as a teaching tool for undergraduates. BASIC has been one of the most commonly used computer programming languages, a simple computer language considered an easy step for students to learn before more powerful languages such as FORTRAN.
BASIC's popularity was spread by both Paul Allen and William Gates, in 1975. Gates and Allen (both Microsoft founding fathers) wrote a version of BASIC for the Altair personal computer. It was the first product Microsoft sold. Later Gates and Microsoft wrote versions of BASIC for the Apple computer, and IBM's DOS which Gates provided came with its version of BASIC.
================================================
So Bill Gates, contrary to your assertion, did NOT invent BASIC. I was using a version of BASIC before there were personal computers, back in the days when you had to submit a stack of Hollerith punched cards to the computing center and then come back in a couple of hours to get your printout.

How about keeping the discussion here down to the software? Not your totally incorrect personal rants, okay?
This software doesn't look useful for me, so I'll pass. Thanks, GOTD.
