iResizer scale an image without changing important visual content such as people, buildings, animals, etc. iResizer lets you shrinking or enlarging images to improve a composition, fit a layout, or change the orientation.
Another program which does the same (and exceptionally well too) is Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor).
And it is free to boot!
Having enjoyed something of a flirtation with the GAOTD community for a long time, Teorex, the developer of today's GAOTD, is increasingly looking more and more like an adopter (there's a less polite term, but I'll stick with 'adopter') of original free Open Source software which is then re-packaged with slight changes for commercial gain.
Such unacknowledged 'adoption' has long occurred and, sadly, may continue on. After all, millions of users of paid-for audio / video conversion software are led to believe that what they've bought, or received free, is entirely the work of the developer concerned. It isn't. The Open Source freeware ffmpeg project is the originator: http://ffmpeg.org/
Software writers who work hard and long to sustain the Sourceforge freeware ethos know that commercial companies make $millions from Open Source originals. Hey. It's the way the world is. But they do appreciate it when that which they create for the benefit of everyone, free of charge, isn't then traded commercially on the basis that somehow, it's original and unique.
Today's offer is no exception. I've DL'd and installed it. And -- because I'm familiar with this particular Open Source project -- have gone here, too:
http://hugin.sourceforge.net/
I know Giovanni will at some stage today make a welcome contribution about freeware alternatives. But where today's GAOTD developer is concerned, I'm not talking about a freeware alternative to the Teorex 'product'. I'm talking about what looks uncomfortably like the freeware original of this $20 product.
It's not the first time that this question of provenance has cropped up with Teorex: anyone here who missed the May 10th GAOTD of Teorex's $20 iResizer should go here today:
http://code.google.com/p/seam-carving-gui/
Yes. How odd indeed, the similarity between a freeware research project that existed *before* a commercial product offering similar abilities.
Thanks then, GAOTD, but no thanks where today's offer is concerned. There's no point in downloading a commercial product that's free today but paid-for tomorrow when an existing freeware application not only does the same job but seems, er, uncannily similar.
There's also the fact that, if one goes here:
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ice/
it will be instantly apparent why Teorex really is backing the wrong horse this time around if it thinks photo-stitching software has a profitabl commercial future.
Nice app as almost every other product made by this company!!
But hey....why pay 20 bucks if you can do the same things as this GAOTD for FREE???

Enjoy!!
Microsoft ICE has been mentioned a couple of times. One fantastic feature of MS ICE is it can create a panoramic photo from a video, so if you use your camera to make a sweeping video, you can easily convert this into a photo. This works great for weddings, etc.
I found "Microsoft ICE" and have used it a number of times with excellent results and its free! ICE stands for Microsoft Image Composite Editor.
Stitch

「Image Composite Editor」
